What Does a Bookkeeping Business Mentor Actually Do?
Sep 08, 2026
When I started my bookkeeping business back in 2000, this kind of support didn't exist. ICB didn't exist. ABN didn't exist. There was no one to call when I wasn't sure what to charge, no one to ask whether I should take on that difficult client, no one who'd already made the mistakes I was about to make. I did it the hard way, and I can tell you exactly what that cost me. Years of undercharging, years of working every hour I could find, years of imposter syndrome, and a long stretch of feeling like I was the only person in the profession trying to figure this out.
A mentor has already walked the road you're on
The real value of a mentor for bookkeepers isn't just the motivation or cheerleading. It's that they've already built what you're trying to build, so they can tell you what's ahead, what to avoid, and where the potholes are. When a bookkeeper tells me they're at capacity and exhausted, I don't need it explained... I've lived it. When someone's agonising over raising their fees, I know that conversation from the inside, because I spent years charging fees I knew were too low before I finally did something about it.
A good bookkeeping mentor shortcuts your mistakes. Pricing, systems, taking on your first team member, marketing, deciding which clients to keep. These are all decisions you can spend years getting wrong on your own or get right much faster with someone beside you who's already done it.
Why I didn't just offer 1:1 mentoring
Here's what I noticed when I started mentoring bookkeepers. The people who most needed the support were often the ones who could least afford it. 1:1 mentoring is powerful, but it can be a big financial investment, which puts it out of reach financially for many bookkeepers.
That's why I built The Bookkeeper's Academy as a membership. I wanted the mentoring experience, the guidance, the frameworks, the someone-who's-done-it-before, at a price a bookkeeper at any stage could afford. And I wanted it focussed on what I think matters most… showing bookkeepers what they can actually create with this profession. Financial independence, freedom, and a business that works for your life, whatever that looks like for you.
There's no one right size for a bookkeeping business. Some of our members want to stay solo, and we support them to build the most profitable, efficient solo practice they can. Others want to build an empire, with a team and a business that runs without them. Every stage and every size 'belongs' in the Academy, because the fundamentals (pricing well, building systems, knowing your numbers, dealing with clients, communicating value) are the same, it's only the scale that changes.
What that support looks like
Inside The Bookkeeper's Academy, the mentoring happens in a few different ways. There are learning modules and resources covering everything from marketing to pricing, systems through to growing a team, onboarding new clients through to disengaging difficult clients, my own personal insights, and loads more, drawn from my 30 years in the profession. There are the practical tools (calculators, templates and guides) so you're not starting anything from a blank page. There are two live Q&As every month, where members can openly talk about their wins, their challenges and ask anything at all. There is content and demos on tech, tools and AI, because staying current is part of staying profitable. And for those who want to go deeper, 1:1 mentoring is there too.
What I wish I'd had access to when starting out
If you'd asked me twenty years ago what a mentor would have given me, I'd have said answers. Now I'd say something different... I'd say belonging.
It's easy in this profession to see other bookkeepers as competitors. What I found instead was a support network. Finding my tribe changed everything, though I didn't find them until I'd already been in business for almost 15 years, and it was a lonely journey to that point.
The bookkeepers in our community share what's working, celebrate each other's wins, and pick each other up on the hard weeks, because they understand this business in a way nobody else in your life quite can. You stop feeling like you're the only one. That, as much as any strategy or template, is what I wish I'd had when I started out.
So, do you need a bookkeeping business mentor?
You can absolutely do this without one. I did. But it took me longer, cost me more, and was lonelier than it needed to be. What a mentor really does is compress the journey. You still do the work, you just spend far less of it feeling lost.
If you'd like that support around your own business, that's exactly what The Bookkeeper's Academy is for, and you can find everything, including the membership and 1:1 mentoring, at thebookkeepersacademy.com.
